Painting in the Landscape Workshop
Saturdays, February 27-March 20, 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., and scheduled time on March 27
In partnership with Lamar State College – Orange, the Stark Museum of Art offers a landscape painting workshop. Open to painters with some experience with acrylics or oils. Tour the Stark Museum of Art and paint outdoors. We will conclude at Art in the Park on March 27. The workshop fee is $20; registration required. Sculpture Dedication and Conversation with Artist Dan Ostermiller

The Stark Museum of Art will host artist Dan Ostermiller, creator of the Museum’s new outdoor sculpture Oblivious, for a sculpture dedication and artist’s conversation. Using images of the artist’s works, Dr. Sarah Boehme, Director of the Stark Museum of Art, will talk with Ostermiller about his artistic process, his influences, and his sculptures. The artist will also respond to questions from the audience. A reception with refreshments will follow at the Stark Museum of Art, where Oblivious is installed at the entrance of the Museum.

This exhibition focuses on the flower as an inspiration for the visual arts. Blooms: Floral Art in the Stark Collections explores flowering beauty as expressed in works of art from early botanical books to exuberant still-life paintings.
Family Activities with Art in the Park
March 27, 2010, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Stark Park and Stark Museum of Art
The Stark Museum of Art will host an art-making booth at Art in the Park and will sponsor family activities inside the Museum. At the booth visitors will create their own art and will see works from Museum classes. At the Museum docents will provide family-friendly tours of the exhibition Blooms: Floral Art in the Stark Collections and more hands-on activities. Free for all ages.
Introduction to Floral Painting in Watercolor
Tuesdays, April 13 - May 4, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
In partnership with Lamar State College – Orange, the Stark Museum of Art offers a Floral Painting class. Take inspiration from the exhibition Blooms: Floral Art in the Stark Collections, and paint from flowers and plants for 4 sessions. Beginners welcome. The workshop fee is $40; registration required. In Pistols: Dazzling Firearms, fifty exceptional American firearms illustrate how art, historical events, and popular culture have influenced the design and symbolism of decorative weaponry. Pistols: Dazzling Firearms was organized by the Museum of the American West, Autry National Center, Los Angeles, California.

Reception for Educators

School district superintendents, principals, and teachers from local schools will be hosted at a reception to meet the Education Department, including new Chief Educator, Dr. Elena Ivanova, and to learn about exciting programs for K-12 students. Entwined across the Ages
Illuminated Manuscripts and Tapestries
November 21, 2009 – January 30, 2010
This holiday-season exhibition features the Stark Museum of Art’s collection of medieval illuminated manuscripts exhibited within a setting of twentieth-century wall tapestries that were inspired by arts from the medieval period. Entwined across the Ages highlights the variety and richness of manuscript illustrations in the Books of Hours and includes images of the Christmas story.
Holiday Exhibition Celebration
Tuesday, December 15 and Thursday, December 17 ▪ 5 – 8 p.m.
In coordination with the Holiday Open House of The W.H. Stark House, the Stark Museum of Art will host a Holiday Exhibition Celebration on two evenings. The special exhibition Entwined across the Ages: Illuminated Manuscripts and Tapestries will be open. Gallery Spotlights. Refreshments will be served for House and Museum visitors of all ages. Free admission.
Presentation: Making Tapestry an American Art: The Legacy of Lorentz Kleiser

Originally inspired by European masterpieces, artist Lorentz Kleiser turned to American literature, history, flora and fauna as subjects for tapestries designed for public buildings as well as private homes. Founder of the Edgewater Tapestry Looms in New Jersey, Kleiser was instrumental in introducing tapestry to the general public both through his work and his nationwide lectures.
