Thirtieth Anniversary Treasures: Unseen Works from the Stark Collection is a special exhibition at the Stark Museum of Art celebrating the Museum’s thirtieth anniversary. The exhibition offers a new look at the breadth and depth of the museum’s collections and will feature works of art never before displayed to the public.
The exhibition features more than 55 works of art, including recently-acquired paintings by Thomas Moran and Grafton Tyler Brown, the first African-American artist represented in the collection.
Four exhibition themes explore how the works of art show the necessity of European training, the importance of travel beyond the American West, the significance of an American context, and the expansion of the Western story. Featured artists include Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Grandma (Anna Robertson) Moses, Rosa Bonheur, George Catlin, and Julian Onderdonk. Works range from a glowing portrayal of Venice, Italy, to a charming representation of winter rural life in America.
The exhibition was originally slated to close on October 29, 2008; however, it has been extended, in a slightly abbreviated form. According to Stark Museum of Art Director Sarah E. Boehme, most of the works of art from the original version of Thirtieth Anniversary Treasures exhibition are included in the extended version of the exhibition. Thirtieth Anniversary Treasures will be available for viewing when the Museum reopens to the public on November 4, 2008 and continues until January 6, 2009.
