The bird that Audubon and others of his time called the Mountain Mocking-bird is today identified as the Sage Thrasher.  Audubon drew this bird from a single specimen procured in the Rocky Mountains by John Kirk Townsend.  In his text, Audubon quoted another naturalist who described encountering this bird in the West and hearing "the cheering song of this delightful species, whose notes considerably resemble those of the Brown Thrush, with some of the imitative powers of the Mocking-bird."
