William Robinson Leigh

Illustrator, painter and writer, W.R. Leigh made his first trip to the Southwest on a job for the Santa Fe Railroad. His bold use of color met with scorn in the early days, but he persisted in depicting the clear light and brilliant hues of the West as he saw it. While in the Southwest he sketched and painted every aspect of life in the region. It was during that phase of his career that he became known as the "Sagebrush Rembrandt."
