Moran first visited the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River when he accompanied the expedition of explorer John Wesley Powell in 1873. Inspired by the incredible beauty, the artist returned often to the site that became the Grand Canyon National Park, located in the northwest corner of the state of Arizona. He interpreted the changing atmosphere that affects the intense colors of the canyon.
