Alexandre Hogue (1898-1994)

Chief Alsate's Profile, Big Bend

1981, oil on canvas
40 x 56 inches (101.6 x 142.2 cm)
31.255.2

Hogue produced this painting as part of a series on Big Bend National Park, painted late in his career. The Texas native had developed his approach to portraying the landscape during the Depression and the Dust Bowl period. In his paintings of Oklahoma and New Mexico he interpreted the land as powerful, yet barren by using simplified, abstracted forms.
