Thomas Moran, who achieved success with his paintings of the wonders of the American West, yearned to paint the romantic city of Venice, Italy.  When he finally visited Venice in 1886, he found a site that inspired his brush.  Responding to the magical combination of light, water, atmosphere and exotic architecture, he created poetic reveries based on Venetian imagery throughout his career.
