Russell's work as a cowboy provided him with experiences and observations he could use for his paintings.  When Russell exhibited this painting at a saloon in Great Falls, Montana, the local newspaper reported, "It represents a cowboy, who has been thrown and is being dragged by his horse, his foot being caught in the stirrup.  His horse is running wildly but not far off is another cowboy, mounted, who is firing at the runaway.  It is a strong work and one of Russell's best.
