This painting portrays the Amaryllis starkii named in honor of Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark.  Professor Ira S. Nelson found bulbs of this plant in Bolivia in 1958.  He and scholar Hamilton P. Traub published the discovery in 1963.  They named the species in recognition of the Starks' support of plant explorations and as token of their esteem.  Nelson gave a flowering bulb to artist Morris Henry Hobbs, who depicted the plant's delicate color and appearance.  Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, Orange, Texas, cultivates this flower.
