ORANGE, Texas, December 10, 2009 – Fun, games, and enrichment are in store for families who attend Winter Family Day at the Stark Museum of Art on Saturday, January 3, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event includes family tours of the exhibition Pictured Prayers: Medieval Books of Hours, a book-making art activity, a peek at life in the middle ages, a scavenger hunt with prizes, storytelling and refreshments. Guests should meet at the Stark Museum Education Center, located at 812 Green Avenue in Orange, Texas, across 7th Street from the museum. Admission is free.
Educator for Public Programs Amelia Wiggins invited families, saying, “We hope families from the Orange community and beyond will join us at the museum on the last Saturday of school vacation for a special day of learning and art-making after the holidays.” The Stark Museum of Art welcomes visitors of all ages, but Wiggins reminds guests that children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Winter Family Day is planned in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibition Pictured Prayers: Medieval Books of Hours, which highlights the illuminated manuscripts in the Stark Museum of Art collection. This will be the second Family Day at the Stark Museum of Art, following the November 8 Fall Family Day when crowds of families came to the museum to paint a mural and tour the galleries.
Located at 712 Green Avenue in Orange, Texas, the Stark Museum of Art is open to the public at no charge Tuesday through Saturday. Hours are from 10 AM – 5 PM. Group tours are available by appointment. For more information call 409.886.ARTS (2787) or visit www.starkmuseum.org.
About the Stark Museum of Art
The Stark Museum of Art focuses on the stunning land, the dramatic people and the diverse wildlife of the American West. Paintings, sculpture and prints interpret the West from nineteenth century frontier artists to the twentieth century artistic colonies in New Mexico. Artists include John James Audubon, Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
The Museum also features a significant collection of American Indian objects, including baskets, pottery, clothing and weavings. Other permanent collections in the Museum include the complete porcelain American Bird Series by Dorothy Doughty and the only complete series of The United States in Crystal, a collection of crystal urns produced by Steuben Glass to depict the 50 states and the Union.
The Stark Museum of Art is a program of the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation, a non-profit organization.
Ellen Wiemers, Isabelle Adams and Katherine Adams are greeted by docent Charlotte Foreman as they enter the Stark Museum of Art Education Center for Family Day.
