ORANGE , TEXAS, July 20, 2007 – Three of North America’s most influential female artists will be the topic of discussion at the Stark Museum of Art’s open book group and brown bag lunch event Thursday, August 16 at noon. Visitors are invited to bring lunch and ideas for a discussion on Sharyn Rohlfsen Udall’s Carr, O’Keeffe, Kahlo: Places of Their Own. The group will meet in the Education Center at 812 Green Avenue. Coffee and water will be provided.
The book features a thought-provoking comparison of three prominent North American artists: Emily Carr from Canada, Georgia O’Keeffe from the United States, and Frida Kahlo of Mexico. The discussion will take an in-depth look at the issues of personal identity, artistic creativity, and national, natural, and mystic themes presented in the text and illustrations. The book group coincides with the Museum’s special exhibition, Bierstadt to O’Keeffe: Highlights of the Stark Museum of Art, which features two works by Georgia O’Keeffe.
Museum director and discussion leader Sarah E. Boehme says the group will help participants “develop a greater understanding of the artists of the 20th century, how art is formed and how biographies shape art.
Interest in the publication grew after the author signed copies of the book during a recent visit to the Museum. The Santa Fe native and art historian has written several publications on North American art.
Carr, O’Keeffe, Kahlo: Places of Their Own is available for purchase in the Stark Museum of Art museum store and through other booksellers. It can also be obtained through public libraries.
The Stark Museum of Art is located at 712 Green Avenue in Orange. It is open to the public Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm. Admission is free. For more information, call 409/883-6661.
