Enjoy the Birds of John Gould and Special Hours at Stark Museum of Art
ORANGE, Texas, November 10, 2011 - The Stark Museum of Art opens a new exhibit called Exotic Beauty: Birds of John Gould on November 19, 2011. This mini-exhibit features lithographs of exotic birds by the English ornithologist John Gould (1804-1881). In addition, a spotlight presentation will be given on "A Pacific Swallow and a Lorikeet" from the exhibit on Sunday, November 20 at 4:00, 4:45 and 5:30 p.m. The Museum will have special hours on November 20, when it will be open from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.
John Gould was a prolific and accomplished publisher of books about birds from around the world; Gould produced illustrations noted for their beauty and accuracy. The exhibit includes examples from his volumes on Asia, Australia, and the report on Charles Darwin's voyage on the Beagle.
Museum Librarian Jenniffer Hudson Connors will give the spotlight presentation. She commented, "Drawing from the rich rare books collection of the Stark Museum, this spotlight features several exquisite works of John Gould. Gould and his wife Elizabeth contributed new knowledge and illustrations in ornithology, particularly that of Australia. I look forward to sharing some of these pacific birds with our visitors, especially those patrons who will be attending South Pacific at the Lutcher Theater."
Exotic Beauty: Birds of John Gould will remain on view through February 25, 2012.
Located at 712 Green Avenue in Orange, Texas, the Stark Museum of Art is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Admission is free for all ages. Group tours are available by appointment. For more information, call 409.886.ARTS (2787) or visit www.starkmuseum.org.
