Orchids from the Hunt

September 28 - November 12, 2011

This mini-exhibit features lithographs of exotic orchids in three botanical volumes.  The nineteenth-century orchid hunter and publisher Jean Jules Linden played a role in the discovery and then the dissemination of these three beautiful flowers.

The exhibit features three volumes of the nineteenth century publication  L’Illustration Horticole, each open to an image of an orchid related to Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898).  The Masdevallia tovarensis and the Odontoglossum ramosissimum were both discovered by Linden during his 1841-1844 expedition to South America.  The Masdevallia lindeni bears a name in honor of Jean Jules Linden.  Linden cultivated these three orchids in his European greenhouses.
